Through the years I have also bought several different brands of western boots. And while most all of them have been really great boots, I can’t say that I have loved any of them more than I have my Luccheses!

Lucchese boots have a great look, soft leather, and traditional  leather soles, which I love. The top of the boot fits perfectly around my calf, so they look great with skirts and dresses.  The fact that a boot looks good is obviously very important to me, but a much added benefit of a Lucchese boot is how comfortable they are! They feel broken in almost immediately.  I will often where my boots all day long, so having a pair that is super comfortable makes them even better!

I now own 4 pairs of Lucchese boots and I get tons of compliments every time I wear one of them. I actually had a lady chase after me in a home improvement store parking lot to ask me if she could see the tops of my boots and where I got them from! So I lifted up my jean leg and said “Why the BootJack of course!”

So if you are looking for a great looking, as well as, great feeling pair of western boots, I would definitely recommend a pair of Lucchese boots!

First the term waterproofing is a misnomer. If your boots did not come from the factory as waterproof boots, then it is very hard to make them completely waterproof now. But there are some products you can use to greatly improve their ability to withstand water, keeping your feet dryer longer.

Listed below are some products to help your non-waterproof footwear resist water more effectively, as well as, what products to use on your already waterproof boots:

*A note of caution… before putting anything on your boots find a small area and test the product to make sure it will not change the color to something you will not like.

Waterproofing Products:

*Follow the direction on the container for each product.

Mink Oil (paste): Very good waterproofing and conditioner for smooth leather. Good for work and outdoor environments. It will darken most leathers.

Sno Seal: (A beeswax based product) Very good waterproofing and conditioner for smooth leather. Good for work and outdoor environments. It will darken most leathers.

Silicone: (liquid or spray) Very good for waterproofing. It should be used on smooth leather only. Use for dress, work or outdoor footwear. It will not usually change the color of the leather, but always test to be sure.

Rain and Stain: (spray) Light waterproofing and stain guard. Best used for dress and street boots. It should not discolor most leathers, but always test to be sure. Most can be used on suede leather. Check label to be sure the one you are using can.

Suede and Nubuck Protector: (spray) When trying to protect suede leathers this is the product you should look for. Best applied after using a brush specially made for suede leather.

Care of Waterproof Boots:

In order to take proper care of your already waterproof boots, you’ll need to know how your boots were made waterproof before using any treatment on the boots. There two prevalent methods, the first uses waterproof leather and seam-sealed stitching. The second method uses a waterproof membrane that is breathable. The membrane is placed between the leather and the inside liner.

If your boot has waterproof leather, you would typically use a silicone product either in spray or bottle. I like the bottle type better as you have more control as you apply it. If your boot uses a membrane, you should not need to treat the boot for waterproofing. Just use a leather balm or light leather conditioner to help kept the leather from dry rotting. You will not want to use a heavy oil treatment it may affect the breathability of the membrane.

If you have never worn western boots, figuring out how they are suppose to fit might seem like a daunting task…that’s why here at the BootJack, we pride ourselves on having friendly, knowledgeable sales associates that can assist you in finding the best fit for your western boots.

Here are some key things we look for to ensure you are getting a proper fit:

The Width & Instep- While you should not have to break a sweat to put on a new pair of boots, a boot that fits properly should cause you to do a little work the first couple of times you put them on. Ideally you want the instep and the width of a new boot to fit “comfortably” snug, but by no means tight. The reasoning is that once your boots start to break in, the leather will begin to stretch, so if your boots weren’t snug to begin with, they might end up being too loose!

The Heel- In a new pair of western boots you should have a slight slip in the heel- anywhere from ¼ to ½ an inch. I know it sounds strange, but because the boot is new and the sole is stiff there is nothing preventing your heel from rising up and down. But once the sole begins to loosen up, most of the slippage will disappear. If you do not have any heel slippage to start with, the boot might end up being too tight and cause blisters!

The Toes- You should have plenty of room for your toes. Once a boot has been broken in, your toes tend to settle more forward in the boot, so you want to make sure they do not start off crammed into the toe box area. When standing, your toes should touch, but not push against, the sides of the boot and the ball of your foot should be in the widest part of the boot. If these two things are happening, your toes are most likely in the right place.

The Sound – That’s right…the sound. Here at the BootJack, we often listen to the “sound” a boot makes when a customer tries on a new western boot. We want to hear a little “pop” once your heel makes its way into the boot. If it makes that sound… chances are we probably found the right size boot for you. But if the boot makes no sound or a sound like you are squashing small fruit, well then the boot is too big and we must adjust accordingly!

So here’s all you need to remember…

Snug in the width, slip in the heel, wiggle room, sounds like?, and oh yeah…how do they look!
